You'll see the term "spoonie" used a lot around here.

Spoonie is a nickname derived from The Spoon Theory, which was created by Christine Miserandino as a way to explain how someone with chronic illness must budget their energy. Spoons are like units of energy. When you have a chronic illness, you only get so many spoons to use each day, so you must use them strategically. Chronic illness warriors all over the world now affectionately refer to themselves as Spoonies. It's been a way for us to create a sense of community and friendship so that none of us has to feel alone in our struggle.

I like to expand this term to also include people who live with chronic pain and chronic mental illnesses. We all face similar struggles and stigma, and regardless of our diagnoses, many of us also experience similar symptoms.

Yoga is a practice, a philosophy, a lifestyle that addresses every aspect of a person: mind, body and spirit. When one aspect of our constitution is out of alignment, the others tend to follow suit. We must keep all three in balance if we want to experience vitality.

Yoga is for everyBODY! You will never be turned away for not being "healthy enough." Likewise, you will never be turned away for being "too healthy." At Sleepy Santosha, we welcome anyone who feels that they could benefit from yoga practices that focus on self-acceptance and healing.
