SPOONIE YOGA: CORE + BACK STRENGTH

Core strengthening is an aspect of my fitness that I tend to neglect. Building core strength has always felt so difficult to me. Like, you spend so much time on it, do a million crunches, and still it feels like you’re not getting anywhere. To make matters worse, most ab exercises are not spoonie-friendly.

These obstacles make me want to give up on the whole endeavor sometimes, but I know how important it is to have a strong core. Conditioning these muscles helps with posture, which can help alleviate some of the muscle pain we experience. It can also improve the function of our digestive system. It’s also important for those of us with orthostatic intolerance and POTS to condition these muscles so that it is easier for our bodies to sit and stand upright.

Although I sometimes wish it were, neglecting my core is not an option. As somebody who hates traditional ab exercises, I have found creative ways to use my yoga practice to strengthen these muscles so that I can get stronger on my own terms and without triggering my chronic illness symptoms.

The gentle poses in today’s spoonie yoga practice video will help strengthen the muscles of the core and back so that we can stand tall and move more comfortably in our daily lives. This sequence is one that I do in my own home practice, and I hope it helps you feel strong and energized.
